CEE Laboratory Facilities

The University of South Florida Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering maintains the following laboratory facilities for our undergraduate and graduate students to use in their education and research.

Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR)

The Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR) is committed to remaining on the leading edge of technology to advance our research and outreach capabilities. CUTR’s priority of staying state-of-the-art is evidenced by the wide range of computer software, hardware, and related equipment it has at its disposal. These technological advantages facilitate our research and enable the production of high quality guidebooks, brochures, training aids, and documents in a variety of media including CD-ROM, video, printed copy, multimedia presentations, and teleconferenced workshops. 

CUTR’s hardware includes more than 100 personal computers and laptop computers.  The
upper level machines are Pentium4 4GHz with high-end graphic capacity and >240GB hard drives, with optional various Iomega drives. The average desktop machine at CUTR is a Pentium4 2 GHz with 256MB RAM and a 60GB hard drive.


Other computer hardware that CUTR uses includes recordable CD and DVD drives, numerous flatbed scanners, several LCD projectors, more than 20 Hewlett Packard LaserJet Printers, including color LaserJet printers, a Hewlett Packard DesignJet 650c 36" Color Plotter, numerous digital cameras, a Polaroid slide and photo-negative scanner, VCRs, and digital video cameras for motion-video capture, as well as the full video production studio on the USF campus.

CUTR also has expertise in a broad spectrum of software: MS Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and MS FrontPage; Corel WordPerfect; Paradox; Adobe PhotoShop, PageMaker, Acrobat, and Illustrator; Statistical Analysis S/W including SAS and SPSS; Simulation Modeling S/W including GPSS/H and ARENA; NeuralNet; Turbo C++; Visual Basic; Delphi Developer; GIS packages including MapInfo, ArcGIS, ArcView, and Maptitude; and video capturing, processing and rendering capabilities utilizing Adobe Premiere, After Effects, Fluition(SMIL), Discreet Cleaner, & Real Streaming Media.


Environmental and Water Resources Engineering
The Environmental and Water Resources Engineering (EWRE) program at the University of South Florida (USF) maintains over 8,000 square feet of research laboratory space, providing state-of-the-art analytical and experimental equipment for chemical and biological work.  This includes 5,000 square feet of new laboratory space housed in the Interdisciplinary Research Building.  
The existing laboratories are equipped with fume hoods and bench space to accommodate approximately 30 research students. In addition, a separate laboratory (approximately 450 square feet) is dedicated for teaching purposes.  Field sampling equipment available at USF includes battery operated pumps, Van Dorn surface water sampler, Van Veen bottom grab sampler, soil corer.  Specific equipment includes: Tekran Series 2600 CVAFS Automated Mercury Analyzer, Varian Duo AA240 / Zeeman Ultra Atomic Absorption Spectrometer/ Cold Vapor Accessory, Perkin-Elmer ICP-MS, Perkin-Elmer Clarus 500 gas chromatograph with autosampler, electron capture detector (ECD), and flame ionization detector (FID), Varian SATURN gas chromatograph with mass spectrometry (GC/MS), Perkin Elmer HPLC, Series 200 UV/Vis Detector, Perkin Elmer ICPS, Genysis UV/visible spectrophotometer, Environmental Express Digital Hot Block, Quanta Hydrolab multimeter probe (pH, DO, T, TDS, Turbidity, Depth), Malvern Zetasizer particle size analyzer with dynamic and static light scattering, Fisher drying oven and Thermolyne muffle furnace, UV cabinet, Shimadzu Total Organic Carbon/Nitrogen analyzer, ORION 940 A pH meters, Automatic titrators, and Amerex AT-HV-85 autoclave.

Corrosion Engineering Laboratory


The Corrosion Engineering Laboratory is a recently built 2,500 sq. ft. addition to the Engineering Research complex on the North side of the USF campus. Closely integrating education and research, the laboratory incorporates the offices of Prof. A. Sague’s and graduate students/visiting researchers active in the area of durability of engineering materials. The laboratory is one of few in the U.S. focused on solving corrosion problems in cement and concrete applications, with emphasis on enhancing durability of the large inventory of marine bridges in the State of Florida. Other areas of interest include interdisciplinary diagnostic and forecasting of materials performance of metals in natural environments, advanced corrosion modeling, electrochemical evaluation methods, nuclear waste, and semiconductor electrochemistry.

The laboratory contains several state of the art potentiostatic and electrochemical impedance systems, exposure tanks and environmental chambers for corrosion evaluation with multiple electrochemical controllers, metallographic preparation, chemical analysis systems, and an array of custom built electrochemical cells as well as a rotating disk electrode. An adjacent Test Yard is used for exposure and evaluation of materials used in field applications. Portable equipment for field testing includes soil and concrete resistivity units and potentiostats. Samples prepared at the laboratory are also analyzed in conjunction with the metallographic, electron optics, x-ray diffraction and nano-characterization equipment available to the College of Engineering. Concurrent with the experimental activities, computer analysis and predictive model development and implementation are conducted regularly to validate and expand the materials performance laboratory findings.

Clean Energy Research Center
The Clean Energy Research Center at the University of South Florida has been working in the broad areas of renewable hydrogen production, hydrogen storage and fuel cells for the last 10 years. The mission of the center is to develop, evaluate and promote commercialization of new environmentally clean energy sources and systems such as hydrogen, fuel cells, solar energy conversion, biomass utilization, photocatalysis etc., that meet the needs of the electric power and the transportation sector through multi-disciplinary research, technical and infrastructure development and information transfer. The Center supports regional economic development of manufacturing and high technology business, in conjunction with the National goals of improving our global competitiveness and technology leadership. CERC has been awarded more than 15 million in contracts and grants over the past 10 years. The CERC team comprises of 20 affiliated faculties from different disciplines (Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Industrial, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry) of USF, staff and 20 graduate and undergraduate students.
