The Mini-Circuits DFX Lab Engineering Design and Build Contest is held every spring and fall semester. The goal of this contest is to encourage innovative and creative engineering design and build in the creation of an engineering artifact that solves a real problem and is potentially marketable.

Prizes will be awarded as:

•  First place -- $2500

•  Second place -- $1000

•  Third place -- $500

CONTEST RULES
  • All undergraduate students in good academic standing in the College of Engineering are eligible to participate. Both teams and individuals may enter the contest.

  • The final submission is a video, no more than five minutes long, describing the design, showing the build, and demonstrating the operation of the engineering artifact.

  • The build must make use of at least two tools in the Mini-Circuits DFX Lab and this must be shown clearly in the submitted video.

  • The submitted video will be judged by a panel of faculty and by student peers. The judging criteria and weights will be as follows:
  • Originality to be judged by a faculty panel for 25%

  • Design and build quality to be judged by a faculty panel for 25%

  • Craftsmanship and presentation quality to be judged by a faculty panel for 25%

  • Overall project strength to be judged online by peer students for 25%
WHAT IS A
GOOD PROJECT TO SUBMIT?

Any project that you have built in the Mini-Circuits DFX Lab that demonstrates invention and innovation – good engineering design – is a good project to submit. This could be a project completed for a capstone design course, as part of a student society event, or it could be a project you did independent from any of your classes or student societies. Projects that have been previously submitted are eligible (but if you did not win a prize on your first submission you may wish to re-think the project and possibly rework parts of it to make it more competitive).

FINAL SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS:

Submit your video to gainesj@usf.edu by April 5th at midnight. Large video files should be submitted via dropbox or some other cloud-based file sharing service. Awards will be announced at the beginning of the 2019-2020 academic year.
