Laboratory experiment

We will measure the octanol-water partition coefficient for acetophenone.  Click here for the instructions.

Exams, tests, and quizzes (incl. from previous years)

The 2022 midterm exam was administered on March 9.
Here is my solution set to the 2022 midterm exam.

Other documents and figures

I made a figure that compares fractional conversion in a CMFR and a PFR for first-order reaction at steady state.  For a given value of the Damköhler number, the PFR is always more efficient than the CMFR.  The difference seems to be greatest when Da ≈ 2 or so (…I haven’t checked that mathematically, I am just eyeballing it from the graph).

…by the way, if you like that graph, see also one of the homework problems on HW 8, for the reactor with the triangle-shaped residence-time distribution function; I graphed fractional conversion vs Da for the “triangle” reactor, and, as expected, it falls between the CMFR and the PFR, but much closer to the PFR (for the particular RTD that I gave in the problem).
