Mechanical engineering is the second largest discipline and one of the oldest. Mechanical Engineers use the principles of chemistry, physics, mechanics of material, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, static's, and dynamics to design all sorts of mechanism. Mechanical engineers design and develop more powerful and efficient automobile and jet engines; more efficient and environmentally-sound heating and cooling system; safer working environments through the use of areas such as instrument systems and controls, materials engineering, trilogy (the study of friction and wear), and micro-Electro-mechanical system.

The above technical fields are based in therefore important areas in Engineering: Energy, design structure/motion of mechanical systems, and Manufacturing.

Energy: The area in the mechanical engineering that is involved with the production and transfer of energy and the conversion from to another.  Mechanical engineers  operate on power plants and one of the main concern are the economical combustion of fuels, the conversion of heat energy into mechanical energy, the use of mechanical energy to produce useful work

Manufacturing: Involves the conversion of raw material to a specific product. Mechanical engineers are the one responsible for  manufacturing machines and tools which evolves from an idea to reality

Design of Structures/ Motion of mechanical systems.  Mechanical engineers are involved in most of the machines and apparatus that we use in our everyday lives. Mechanical engineers design airplanes, cars, trucks, motorcycles, rockets, etc. Mechanical engineers also design things such as mechanical pencil, toys, fax machines, blenders, air-conditioning system, and more.

                                                         Engineering Student Projects

Undergraduate Students at the University of South Florida have the opportunity to work on engineering projects that are both FUN and REWARDING! Here are some examples of what students have done in the past.
