What is the Engineering Outreach Page ?
Engineering Outreach is a page for college freshman, high school students and other people interested in careers in engineering.
What is the goal of this page ?
The goal of this page is to provide those interested in engineering with answers to the following questions.
What is engineering ?
A Technical Definition: Engineering is a profession in which the principles of mathematical and physical science , experience, and practice are to develop ways to utilize economically the materials and forces of nature for the progressive well-being of mankind. Engineering requires ingenuity, craftsmanship, and judgment in adapting knowledge to practical purposes. In the world of engineering the main goal is to solve problems. On a basis of a unknown problem, the engineer must create or design ways to solve problems for the unknown future.
Engineers are innovators, creators and problem solvers that turn the ideas into reality. Engineers are the responsible for making life a little easier and better for the human kind. People who make things work better or more efficiently. Look around you and you will see that engineering is everywhere. For example: airplanes, cars, trains, powerplants are the results of engineering.
Engineering may be for you if:
1. Youre always taking
things apart to see how they work . 2. You are fascinated with cars, planes, electronics, machines, or structures. 3. You still play with your erector set. 4. You actually used that chemistry set your parents gave you. 5. You didnt electrocute yourself with your 101 electrical device kit. 6. You want to make a tangible contribution to society and make the world a better place. 7. You think is funny. 8. You did or are doing well in math science. 9. You want to find meaningful and gainful (i.e, $$) employment after college graduation. 10. You are a creative and innovative person. |
What is the difference between engineering technology and engineering science ?
There are several types of degrees in engineering, and those are dependent on the path of engineering education one takes. Those path are :
How to choose a college of engineering ?
There are a lot of factors that one should consider when
choosing a college or university. Engineering programs are ranked by their mission, region
and their academic excellence; However, universities are selected also by convenience,
tradition or personal recommendation.

What are the benefits of becoming a member of an engineering Societies ?
There are a number of Engineering Societies which are
excellent resources for engineers. These societies organize and host conferences and
meetings, and publish trade magazines and journals. The societies provide platforms for
the exchange of ideas and information. They also provide a source of new information for
keeping practicing engineers current with technological advances. These are some of the
many benefits associated with joining engineering societies and participating in their
activities. Most Engineering Societies have local chapters with local meetings and
activities.

What is a Co-op program?
It is part of a degree program that includes earning academic credit for actual work experience with various local or national companies in cooperation with the engineering goals of the university. Generally, after two or three years of coursework, students alternate semesters working under the supervision of a professional engineer in their selected field obtaining valuable hands-on, practical experience while earning money and sometimes company benefits. Co-ops give students an opportunity to apply the new skills they have learned as well as establish invaluable contacts in industry. Although participation in co-ops may lengthen the time required to obtain an engineering degree, the tradeoff is well worth the sacrifice. Please visit these sites for more information. |
What about Salaries ?
An engineer's salary depends on the specific area of discipline, level of
education, and years of experience. Here are some links that provide useful data for
comparison.
