The Black & White Argentine Tegu (Tupinambis merianae) has been a staple of the pet trade for several years having been imported in large numbers from their native S. America. Males can grow as large as 57”(TL), weigh 18 lbs, and live 20 years (in captivity). |

Tegus have recently been sighted in Hillsborough County, Florida, probably due to the release of captive pets. Although neither their numbers or potential impact on the local ecology are known as yet, they are clearly not part of the natural fauna of Florida. |
