Ceramic Matrix Composites: Aircraft Applications

Page Numbers of Book : 44-46

Summary: GE Aviation is incorporating the use of ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) on their preferred engine of the future, the LEAP engine. The high temperature tolerances of CMCs over polymer matrix composites makes them better suited to the jet engine core environment, and their specific strength relative to metal matrix composites makes them a better choice when making weight and fuel consumption considerations. One interesting note is that their method produces fiber versus cylindrical cords, which are more common.
